  FIELD SERVICE
Situation: A field service company uses only 2 megabytes per month per technician for text dispatching over a GPRS network. But they are having trouble controlling airtime usage costs. Technicians are using other applications and surfing the web via GPRS, forcing the company to consider an expensive unlimited data usage airtime plan.

Solution: Utilizing Mobility XE's Policy Management Options, the field service company solves their dilemma. They now centrally manage and limit HSDPA airtime to specific areas such as a dispatch application, a group of intranet web sites, and an instant messaging application to improve intra-workforce communications. All other applications are required to have a broadband connection via the corporate LAN or WLAN. This solution results in a reduction of over 50% in HSDPA airtime costs from the unlimited usage rate. By saving them 20% off their old airtime usage rate they easily recover their investment in less than a year!

PUBLIC SAFETY—Law Enforcement, EMS, Fire
Situation:  A police department has GoBook computers. While they can upgrade their notebooks to EV-DO Rev A with no difficulty, they are in a quandry over what to do with their applications. Dynamic IP addressing disrupts their applications as officers enter and leave coverage. When around the station they use Wi-Fi to add bandwidth and save on airtime usage costs; but, when they leave the station and are a block away (out of Wi-Fi coverage), they must shut down all applications then reboot and restart the applications.

Solution: Using Mobility XE they eliminate both the dynamic IP addressing issue, and solve the roaming from EV-DO Rev A to Wi-Fi problems transparently, without any modifications or upgrades to the applications. The officers stay connected regardless of where they are, enabling more time for them to be on patrol and improving their incident response times.

INSURANCE CLAIMS ADJUSTING
Situation:  A claims adjuster uses a notebook with integrated EV-DO Rev A. The adjuster receives claims assignments wirelessly and then transmits claim documentationincluding photoswirelessly in real-time to speed processing of a settlement to the customer. However, photos upload slowly over the WWAN, especially in areas with poor coverage and at peak network usage times due to network congestion.

Solution: Using Mobility XE the insurance company surmounts these problems. Now the adjuster is able to roam seamlessly via WLANs while visiting body shops or working at the office. Also, the adjuster now has broadband access for rapid uploads of photos. The adjuster no longer wastes time shutting down and restarting applications whenever there is a coverage change. In addition, customer data security is ensured with Mobility XE's innovative wireless security features.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS SERVICES
Solution:  A DSL/Cable technician with a HSDPA-enabled notebook installs new broadband data service in a customer's home. When the technician fires-up the wireless router, his notebookenabled with Mobility XEautomatically roams from HSDPA coverage to the 802.11 LAN. Using his Mobility XE connectivity he avoids shutting down his dispatch application and rebooting or reconfiguring the computer. He tests and demonstrates the new service to the customer and leaves the home. Back in the vehicleout of 802.11b rangehis notebook automatically roams back to HSDPA coverage without any interruption or rebooting. The technician's computer is secure and protected the entire time.

Mobility XE is designed to complement existing IT systems and reduce the complexity of mobile deployments while providing highly-centralized control and management. As the mobile networking solution of choice for enterprise IT managers, Mobility XE provides:

  • Wireless Performance Optimization: Enables any application to work over wireless networks without modification or customization and improves data throughput over wide area networks by as much as 100 percent through compression and link optimizations.
  • Standards-based Security: Ensures data is secure regardless of IP-based network or device.
  • True Application Session Persistence: Eliminates lost data and application crashes—even when mobile workers move outside of network coverage, suspend and resume their devices, or roam from network to network.
  • Centralized Management: Provides centralized, flexible management to enforce security and network, user and application access policies. Installs quickly and easily, and is simple to use and manage.
  • InterNetwork Roaming: Turns a multi-network environment, including wireless LANs and carrier-provided wide area networks into an easily managed system.

Protect Networks and Data with Standards-based Security

Mobility XE is designed to secure network access and all data transmissions through the VPN tunnel—to and from mobile devices in the field. Since Mobility XE is designed for mobile and wireless environments, its security and InterNetwork Roaming capabilities are tightly integrated. As mobile workers and their devices roam across networks, their authentication remains intact and the encrypted VPN session persists.

RSA SecurID 2-factor and Single Sign-on Authentication

Mobility XE is certified with RSA SecurID two-factor authentication and supports NTLM and RADIUS authentication protocols to protect networks from unauthorized access. Mobility XE offers single sign-on authentication with standard Microsoft Windows login credentials. This saves mobile workers valuable time as they traverse networks and coverage areas, and provides a more transparent user experience. There are no additional steps to learn or passwords to remember. Single sign-on authentication combined with VPN enforcement also prevents users from circumventing the VPN security.

FIPS 140-2 Validated AES Encryption

FIPS validated encryption is the United States government's standard for security. Mobility XE encrypts all data transmitted between the Mobility client and server with AES 128-bit, 192-bit or 256-bit strengths. With FIPS 140-2 validated AES encryption, the industry’s highest security standard, Mobility XE provides the security advantages of an IPSec VPN without its configuration, client provisioning and management burdens.

Device Quarantine for Additional Network Protection

And because mobile device loss or theft can compromise information on enterprise networks, Mobility XE lets network administrators quickly and easily quarantine lost or stolen devices. Quarantined devices are unable to authenticate to the network and administrators can easily restore network access when the device is recovered.

Ensure Critical Applications are Always Available

No other VPN can match Mobility XE’s Application Session Persistence™its ability to sustain application sessions even through suspend-and-resume cycles and loss of connectivity. Other VPNs in these situations lose application sessions—causing data loss and corruption, and forcing users to re-login and restart applications.

When a Mobility XE user encounters a coverage gap, open application sessions are maintained until the user's network connection is re-established. If a user loses connectivity while an application is transmitting data, Mobility XE suspends the transmission—for days if necessary. As soon as connectivity is re-established, Mobility XE resumes transmitting the data at the exact point the application was interrupted.

Optimize Performance Over Wireless Networks

Mobility XE’s Wireless WAN Optimization automatically reduces network consumption and improves throughput and application responsiveness, particularly over bandwidth-constrained or wireless networks.

Other VPNs typically degrade performance, especially over wireless networks, often by as much as 50%. Mobility XE uses link optimizations to reduce the number of retransmitted packets, excess control information and other network "chatter," and dramatically improves throughput by compressing data and images. Best-Bandwidth Routing technology ensures the fastest and most efficient available network connection is used.

For example, Mobility XE automatically roams to a WLAN connection the moment it becomes available—resulting in greater productivity, improved efficiency and reduced WAN expenses.

Roam Seamlessly Across Networks

Today's mobile workers use a variety of public and private networks such as conventional wired LANs, corporate Wi-Fi networks, third-party hotspots and Wireless WANs available through cellular carriers. Mobility XE's InterNetwork Roaming capability lets mobile workers change networks seamlessly, transparently and securely—without having to think about their network connections or needing to re-authenticate.

Mobility XE's InterNetwork Roaming is tightly integrated with network persistence, application session persistence and single sign-on authentication so that users do not lose application sessions or have to re-login when they traverse networks, go in and out of network range, or suspend and resume their devices.

The Mobility XE server accomplishes this by establishing a virtual IP address for each VPN session. As users roam, enterprise application servers always see the same, unchanging virtual IP address rather than network-specific IP addresses. With Mobility XE, there is no need to re-segment networks, implement VLANs or deploy additional hardware to enable mobile workers to traverse networks seamlessly. They can focus on their work—not configuring, enabling and disabling adapters.

Manage Thousands of Connections from a Central Console

No other VPN provides the spectrum of flexibility, visibility and control afforded by the Mobility XE Management Console. This robust administrative console allows all aspects of the system to be observed and managed in one centralized location. The web-based interface gives administrators a complete system-wide view, from overall metrics down to device connections, worker behavior and application use. Detailed activity logs preserve a historical view of user activity. From the management console, administrators can quarantine devices that are misused, lost or stolen. The "Client Status" tab in this screen shows device connectivity status, number of quarantined devices and even battery life. From this screen, administrators can search for information on a specific user or device, such as open applications, device operating system and interface or port in use.
